Central District Golf Preview | Division I Men
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The last week of April is upon us, and with it comes the Central District Golf Tournament. Nine teams will travel to play at the Rivercut Golf Course, April 27-28; only three teams will leave with automatic qualification spots for the national tournament in Kansas. Among the nine teams, two are from the ICCAC with Indian Hills and Iowa Western.
The Warriors enter the District as favorites, ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA. Indian Hills has won two of its four tournaments this spring and finished 2nd and 3rd in the other two. Four Warriors are ranked within the top 15 in Division I, with Charlie Preston sitting at No. 3; Preston's adjusted scoring average this season is 70.1.
Additionally, Harry McArdle, Nathan Pouchoulon, Freddie Surgrey and Miles Bollinger are all ranked 13 or higher. Not to mention the rest of the team, which is ranked highly and has strong performances this spring.
Iowa Western is ranked No. 14 and comes into district play with a consistently strong spring record, finishing in the top half of all three tournaments, most recently finishing runner-up at the Howl at the Hill meet. Top of their roster in the rankings is William Welsh, who finished fifth at the Reivers' last meet and has two tournament wins from the fall.
Among the other top-ranked golfers for Iowa Western are Sam Wahman, Steven Gormley and Sam Wells. Wahman has had two top 10 finishes this spring and has an adjusted scoring average of 74.0.
Seven other teams will join the two from Region 6, 16 and 24. As a team, Hutchinson (Kan.) is the highest ranked as a team coming in at No. 7, followed by Garden City, last year's champions, at No. 11.
Hutch is led by Corey Scullion who is ranked No. 8 in the country on the individual rankings. His teammate Jack Northgraves is No. 14.
Last year's champion, Ilan Dufrenoy of Garden City is ranked No. 15 and looks to defend his title.
Over the last five years, there have been five different team champions.
With three team spots up for grabs, the Warriors and Reivers are positioned to be at the top of the leaderboard on the final day. Anything can happen, but put your bets on these two squads making it to Newton, Kan., come April 28.
